Mercedes is a newcomer to the North in The Call of the Wild, the wife of Charles and sister of Hal, a pretty, sentimental woman whose constant chatter and tenderness toward the dogs do little to help her family's ill-prepared expedition.

The wife of Charles and the sister of Hal, she makes a family party of three who buy the worn team at Skaguay and attempt the Long Trail. Pretty and sentimental, she flutters in the way of her men and keeps up an unbroken chattering of remonstrance and advice.
Mercedes shows untold repugnance at the sight of pain and pleads with Hal to spare the dogs the whip, even dropping to her knees to put her arms around Buck's neck. Yet her tenderness and her reluctance to part with comforts are at odds with the harsh demands of the North, where she and her companions are plainly out of their depth.
