## About

Hal is one of the inexperienced newcomers who take charge of Buck's sled team in The Call of the Wild by Jack London. A youngster of nineteen or twenty, he wears a big Colt's revolver and a hunting-knife on a belt that fairly bristles with cartridges — the most salient thing about him, advertising a callowness sheer and unutterable. With his brother-in-law Charles, he buys Buck and his worn mates at Skaguay to chase fortune on the Long Trail.

Hal travels with Charles and his sister Mercedes — a family party manifestly out of place in the North. Quick to reach for the whip and slow to take the seasoned advice of onlookers, he sets out to manage a team and a trail he plainly does not understand.
