Lost Mine

The Lost Mine is a legendary gold deposit of the Northland in The Call of the Wild by Jack London, a quest whose history is as old as the history of the country. Many men have sought it and few have found it, and more than a few have never returned from the search; it is steeped in tragedy and shrouded in mystery.

No one knows of the first man to find it, for the oldest tradition stops before it reaches him. From the beginning the site has been marked by an ancient, ramshackle cabin. Dying men have sworn to the mine and to the cabin that marks it, backing their testimony with nuggets unlike any known grade of gold in the North.
