Spitz

Spitz is a sled dog in The Call of the Wild by Jack London, a big, snow-white animal from Spitzbergen who was brought away by a whaling captain and later accompanied a Geological Survey into the Barrens. A practised and cunning fighter who has held his own across the Arctic, he serves as lead dog of Perrault's team, the acknowledged master that the others obey.

Friendly only in a treacherous way, Spitz smiles into a dog's face while plotting an underhand trick, and he is quick to bully newer or weaker members of the team. From the moment he laughs at the fall of Curly, Buck regards him with a bitter and deathless hatred, and Spitz in turn senses in Buck a dangerous rival to his leadership. Their hostility becomes a standing contest carried mile after mile down the trail, with the dog-drivers François and Perrault watching it build.

Cold and calculating even in his fiercest moods, Spitz fights by experience and never blind rage, defending each attack before he makes his own. He shares the team's grueling work with Dave, Sol-leks, Pike, Billee, and the rest under the fierce conditions of the Northland.
