Buck rules the whole realm as a sated aristocrat: he hunts with the Judge's sons, escorts his daughters Mollie and Alice on rambles, carries his grandsons on his back, and lies at the Judge's feet before the library fire. It is from this settled, dignified life on Judge Miller's estate that Buck is taken.
